Ciao! Bologna, the heart of Emilia-Romagna, is more than just a city; it’s a gastronomic paradise. Nicknamed “La Grassa” (the Fat) for its rich cuisine, this Italian gem is a must-visit for food lovers. Famous for world-class dishes like Bolognese sauce (ragù), tortellini, and mortadella, Bologna’s culinary scene is unparalleled. Beyond its epicurean delights, the city also earned the titles “La Dotta” (the Learned) for its esteemed university and “La Rossa” (the Red) for its distinctive red rooftops. With a perfect blend of culture, history, and unforgettable flavors, Bologna is a city that will tantalize your taste buds and enrich your soul. Here are some of Bologna’s culinary delights.

Due to a flight delay from London to Bologna, finding dinner at 11:30 PM proved challenging. Having heard positive reviews of the original Rome location, I decided to give this branch a try. I ordered the spaghetti arrabbiata (as the sciavatelli was sold out) while others opted for the cacio e pepe and spaghetti amatriciana. Despite my hunger, the pastas was disappointingly mediocre and unsatisfying. Fortunately, the tiramisu and wine helped redeem the meals.

This lively trattoria, centrally located in Bologna, boasts a cozy atmosphere. The menu offers intriguing twists on classic Bolognese cuisine, making it truly tempting. I began with the unexpected but delightful cheese ice cream and a generous charcuterie board, both of which were exceptional. While the gnocchi and eggplant parmigiana were undoubtedly delicious, they couldn’t quite match the extraordinary quality of the appetisers.

Universally praised by Bologna visitors, Sfoglia is renowned for its fresh pasta and delightful restaurant. To bypass the usual queue, time your visit shortly after lunch. Their ricotta ravioli and zucchini risotto are must-tries, but given the consistently exceptional quality of their pasta, any menu choice is sure to impress.

Overview
Ahimè showcases a commitment to sustainability with its focus on natural wines and organic, locally sourced produce. Their menu, frequently updated with vegetables from a Bologna countryside garden, reflects a contemporary approach. While the modern ambiance was a refreshing change from Bologna’s traditional eateries, the food’s experimental nature didn’t quite align with my preferences. Nevertheless, Ahimè offers a unique dining experience and boasts an impressive wine list.

Overview
While technically outside Bologna, a mere 20- 30 minute train ride away, Modena boasts the world-renowned Osteria Francescana, owned by the celebrated chef Massimo Bottura. Having clinched three Michelin stars in 2012 and secured spot 1 in the The World’s 50 Best Restaurant in 2016 and 2018, securing a reservation is nearly impossible. I count myself incredibly fortunate to have booked a table just a week in advance.
The restaurant’s intimate ambiance, characterized by soft lighting, patterned carpets, and warm tones, created a captivating atmosphere. Rather than the full ten-course tasting menu, our party opted for a selection of Chef Bottura’s signature dishes from the à la carte menu. Every plate was exceptional, but the five ages of parmesan, the foie gras appetizers, and the lobster and beef main courses were simply extraordinary. The lemon tart and chocolate dessert were among the finest I’ve ever tasted. This was undoubtedly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, made even more perfect by impeccable service.
