5-DAY GUIDE TO TROMSØ: THE PERFECT WINTER ESCAPE

Can you believe I finally saw the Northern Lights?! It was like a dream come true! I danced my way to Tromsø in December 2021 and it was totally worth the chilly adventure.

But let me warn you, it’s brrrreally cold there during winter! Like, Elsa-level cold. The sun takes a little vacation too, so don’t expect to see it much. But don’t worry, the city lights up with its own kind of magic! We spent our mornings and afternoons doing several unforgettable activities, then bundled up like little snowmen in the evening to explore the cute shops and try yummy food.

Wanna hear more about my frosty fun times?

DAY 1: ARRIVED IN TROMSØ & NORTHERN LIGHTS TOUR

Oh. My. Gosh! Can you believe my luck?! Just as my plane touched down in Tromsø, the pilot made a super exciting announcement – the sky was perfect for Northern Lights spotting!

We traded in our cozy hotel room for a thrilling adventure in a sleek electric Tesla! My hubby and I joined a small group of excited fellow travelers on a mission: to spot the elusive Northern Lights.  We cruised through the snowy landscape, our eyes glued to the sky, hoping to catch a glimpse of the magical lights. Can you imagine the excitement when we finally did? The whole experience was unbelievable and lasted for a total of 5-6 hours.

DAY 2: HUSKY SLED DRIVE WITH LUNCH & TROMSØ TOWN

The next day, we hopped on a bus and headed to a husky farm! I was SO excited to meet some furry friends and try my hand at driving a sled. We chose the self-drive option, which was pure adrenaline! It was like being in a winter wonderland, surrounded by fluffy snow and a team of excited huskies.

Quick tip: They’re Siberian huskies, not Alaskan ones. Still super cute, but just a heads up!

As the day began to wind down, we decided to explore Tromsø’s harbor area. Strolling along the waterfront, we admired the colorful buildings and bobbing boats. The main shopping street, Storgata, was a delightful surprise. Lined with adorable shops and cozy cafes, it was the perfect place to window shop and soak up the local atmosphere. We could practically smell the warm pastries and rich coffee from the inviting cafes, making our stomachs rumble with anticipation. It was the ideal way to end a day in Tromsø.

DAY 3: WHALE WATCHING

We set sail on a super exciting all-day boat trip to spot some amazing sea creatures! Imagine, eight whole hours of searching for orcas, humpback whales, and even fin whales! We were so lucky to see a whale jump right in front of our boat! But even if we hadn’t spotted any whales, the Arctic scenery was still totally breathtaking. It was like being in a real-life postcard!

DAY 4: REINDEER SLEDDING, REINDEER FEEDING & SAMI CULTURE

We had an absolute blast on our 5 hour reindeer adventure! Imagine cuddling up in a warm, cozy sleigh, being pulled along by the most adorable reindeer. They were so gentle and their big, curious eyes were just the cutest! We even got to meet some reindeer babies, who were tiny balls of fluff. After our thrilling ride, we got to spend some quality time with these amazing creatures, feeding and learning all about them. It was like something out of a fairytale, especially when we sat around a crackling fire and listened to stories about the Sami people.

DAY 5: STORSTEINEN VIEWPOINT & DEPARTED FOR OSLO

We decided to take the cable car  up to the top of Storsteinen mountain. The view from the top was absolutely mind-blowing! It was like being on top of the world, with a panoramic view of Tromsø stretching out as far as the eye could see. We tried to explore the hiking trails, but the snow was a bit too deep for our liking. Even though we couldn’t fully explore, just being up there in the fresh air and enjoying the incredible scenery was totally worth it. It was a perfect way to soak up the beauty of Tromsø from a whole new perspective

Brrr, it’s cold outside! If you’re planning a Tromsø adventure, make sure you pack your warmest layers. Think fluffy jackets, toasty hats, and gloves that can brave the Arctic chill.

Also, there are SO many amazing tours to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming. Take your time, do some research, and find the perfect adventures for you!  Trust me, with a little planning, you’ll have the best time exploring this magical place!
